The Beauty of Birch Trees for Home and Landscaping Plantings
The natural habitat is along the streams and wet swampy areas where the trees can get full sunlight. They can grow fast, and in the more controlled environment of the landscape planting, where watering and fertilizing is maintained, growth rates of three
to five feet a year or more are possible.
Plant birches where they will be seen - along a driveway or fenceline, the classic "birch tree clump", or in a garden bed or other area that will get attention. The birch seedling tree trunks will start to turn white when the plants are a few years old,
but that can vary. Birch trees grow fast, and the Beauty of Birch is a tree you will enjoy for many years.
Our favorite is the European White Birch, which has that classic white trunk. They will grow from Zones 2 to Zone 9, and get up to 60+ feet tall. We also have the Paper Birch and Gray Birch, for two other white choices. The River Birch has a white to
cream-colored bark that peels, much like the Paper Birch! Add something different... the Yellow Birch has a yellow-ish peely bark.
How to grow the Birch - Birch like moist full sun conditions, and can vary in the amount of water or wet-ground they will tolerate. The natural habitat is along streams and boggy ground, but in the landscape design they tend to be in drier
well-drained soils. Since water is the key, keep them moist. Almost any soil will work, but sandy, clayey, or rocky soils, add organic materials such as compost. Having a thick mulch layer around them is important to reduce the stress on the roots from
summer heating and soil moisture loss. A shot of fertilizer now and then would be help the birch trees grow also.
What can be more attractive in your yard or along a driveway than a clump of Birch trees? Few trees are more elegant than the birches white-trunks, and golden yellow leaves in Autumn.

The Beauty of Birch, a great tree to have in your yard wherever you live. The birch trees are tolerant of most soil and climate conditions, but these trees do like moisture during the dry summer months. A boost of fertilizer will help with growth and
health of your birch trees, and any other tree or plant for that matter.
Our other Birch trees...
European White Birch - Hardy, and can grow up to 60 feet tall, these are very popular to plant in clumps. Plant
these from Zones 2 to 9, prefers full sun, and likes plenty of water. Beautiful white trunks, these are versatile in clumps, lines, or along driveways. They can grow into a nice shade tree as well.
Paper Birch - Very popular and spread throughout the northern states, the Paper Birch is the classic "white-trunked"
birch, where the bark peels into "sheets". Plant these in groups or individually, from Zones 2 to 9. Like the others, they prefer full sun with moist soils. Like the European, clumps and borders are the favorite uses for these trees.
Yellow Birch - Grows to 80 feet tall, and can be planted from Zones 3 to 8 for shade. They like full sun to half shade, good for wet areas,
and has a yellowish trunk. Good for clumps, along borders, or just plant for that other colored trunk!
Sweet Birch - Good for wet areas, these grow up to 60 feet tall, from Zones 3 to 8. Prefers full sun, and makes a nice small shade tree, or
unique specimen.
Red-Bark Birch - Gets up to 80 feet tall, and can be planted in Zones 4 to 9, they prefer full sun. Cinnamon-red bark makes these a nice
specimen or shade tree.
River Birch- Grows up to 60 feet tall, and is good for Zones 5 to 9. They prefer full sun, these are good for wet areas, borders or limited
spaces, or for shade.

Water Birch- An attractive small tree
or large shrub which grows up to 30 feet tall, often multiple stems. Best in full sunny areas with plenty of water, from Zones 3 to 8, its grows quickly and often forms thickets. Smooth reddish bark, and is resistant to wood boring insects. Great
specimen or accent tree!
Gray Birch- Another of the white-birches, the gray will grow up to 30 feet tall in Zones 3 to 8, with often a twisted trunk. The gray-ish
bark makes this an attractive tree for small spaces.
Each Birch species is unique, and many hybrids are being produced and planted almost nationwide. The differences can be minor, but all of the birches have a common... they're beautiful! When planting birch trees, just make sure they get plenty of water,
sunlight, and have that thick layer of mulch around them.
When Best to Receive the trees?
Like everything in the nursery business, species and supplies will change constantly. The supply of birch is typically good throughout the winter and spring, but that is not to say that items will stay "on the shelves" for long... There is also a pointin early summer where we stop shipping them, and we also encourage Fall planting.
