The Pines
The PinesThe genus is Pinus, where 36 of the 90 to 100 species, are found in the United States. There are species that have been introduced, along with several varieties among these species.
Pines typically are not as popular as the firs or Douglas-fir as Christmas trees, but several species are used. Most pines don't hold their needles as long as the firs, and they often turn brown quickly. Noteable exceptions to this, are the Scots Pine and the Austrian Pine, both hold their needles and color for several weeks.
Pines range in color from medium green to a bluish-green, and often are very fragrant. Pines likewise have a widespread use in landscaping. The growth of pines can be fairly quick, from 2 to 3 feet or more a year is common. The pines vary from being very cold tolerant, down to Zone 2, and and those that can't handle frost. Some pines are good for moist soils, and others can grow well in hot dry regions.
In the landscape planting, pines can be used as privacy screens and windbreaks, but as they get large, the lower branches typically fall off over time, exposing the trunks. So you would want to plant shrubs or other conifers along
with the pines if screens or windbreaks are desired. Pines are great for borders and as specimens. Typically, the pines like full sun and modest amount of water. For dry places, Ponderosa and Lodgepole Pines are ideal.
