The Dogwoods can be planted in groups, mixed with other trees and shrubs, or planted as specimens all by themselves where they will get a lot of visual attention. Dogwoods like full sun and plenty of water, but they will take half shade just fine. The berries are enjoyed by birds and other wildlife, and the flowers on the trees and shrubs are greatly enjoyed by people. Plant a line of Dogwoods along a border or fence, like the shrub-form (Redtwig or Yellowtwig Dogwoods). These can be an great shrub to add to a windbreak or privacy screen. The taller tree-forms also can be planted in lines or groups, but typically, these are planted as specimens. The dogwoods, shrubs or trees, work well when mixed with other trees and shrubs, and they occupy that "middle layer" in the landscape design. The shrub types can be planted as close as four feet apart, and the tree-form Dogwoods can be planted as close as six to eight feet apart. Dogwoods are used in the landscape designwhere their attractive stems and flowers add a nice visual effect, often a focual point in the design.

How to grow these. Simply stated, these grow best in moist well-drained fertile soils with full sun to half shade. Most soils can be alright, but plenty of water and some added fertilizer will improve their growth and survival. If your soils are rocky, heavy clay, or very sandy, then add compost or other materials mixed into the planting spot.
