Paulownia - The Empress Tree and Fast Growing Nursery Plants for Home and Garden
There are several species of Paulownia - Paulownia elongata, Paulownia kawakamii, and Paulownia tomentosa, all native to China, and have been planted in the US for many years. There
are several other names for this tree, Royal Paulownia, Empress Tree, and Princess Tree are among them. They are rated for Zones 6 to 10, and found from New York to western Texas, and along the Pacific coast states, and as far south as Key West. The
southeastern states seem to have quite a lot planted also, as the climate is very favorable in stimulating the Paulownia's fast growth.
How to grow these. Simply stated, these grow best in moist well-drained fertile soils with full sun. Most soils can be alright, but plenty of water and some added fertilizer will improve their growth and survival. If your soils are rocky,
heavy
clay, or very sandy, then add compost or other materials mixed into the planting spot. Planting instructions are included with each order, or can be read on the Nursery webpage.
But as these ship as "root-crowns", pot them for the first season, or at least until they get established, then transplant later.
Paulownia Trees - for Shade & Fragrance
Many trees come and go as fads, and the Paulownia is one those. Although the Paulownia has become popular as a "Get Rich Quick" in the wood-growing market, they are popular for the shade and beautiful fragrant flowers they produce.
What's popular about the Paulownia is that they grow very fast, where 8 to 12 feet a year is considered common, some sources have had growth of 15 to 18 feet in a year! The Paulownia also has large ten inch long masses of fragrant violet to dark blue
flowers that come out between April and May. The Paulownia tends to be medium sized trees, where the Paulownia kawakamii gets up to 30 to 40 feet, and the Paulownia tomentosa gets 40 to 60 feet tall. The Paulownia elongata is used as a timber tree in
China, and gets upwards of 100 feet tall.
Paulownia prefer and grow best in full sun. It is always a challenge to say how fast they will grow, we have
seen growth rates of a couple feet to over ten feet in a season... can be highly variable. Just the better the growing conditions, the longer the
growing season, then the trees should do well. As they can become large with a widespreading umbrella shape, underneath can become very dark shade. Also, allow plenty of space so as not to disturb sidewalks, driveways, and other sensitive areas.
In the landscape design, these are planted as shade trees, in places where they can spread out. The leaves are
oval-pointed, and can get over a foot wide and long. As members of the Trumpet Creeper Family (Bignoniaceae), the leaves are large and almost
heart-shaped. The Catalpa and Trumpet Vine are close relatives. The growth rate of these are very fast, and the flowers are very similar. Certainly the Trumpet Vine is a vine and not a shade tree, but they do belong to the same Family.

The Paulownia are great shade trees, fast growing, and produces fragrant flowers. They are the perfect tree? Well, maybe not. After the flowers fade, the seed capsules are formed. With almost 3 million seeds per pound, they tend
to spread -
everywhere. If the temperature is warm, and given some moisture, they can germinate in about ten days... potentially a gardening nightmare.
Something that seems to be really odd with this tree is that it takes a few years for it to become a tree. It
grows really fast, but at the end of the first three or four seasons, it dies. It acts like a large sunflower, rapid growth, great flower, but when its done, its a weed. It seems to take several years to get out of this stage, to build up a strong root
system to finally become tree-like. This is not necessarily true in all cases, but has been documented... just so you know.
Any tree that grows fast, like poplars and willows, get the attention of the paper industry. The faster a tree
grows, the more carbon particles it pulls out of the air. So there has become a strong interest in growing Paulownia for paper pulp. If the
Paulownia grows fast, and you have idle land sitting there collecting dirt, and if this product can be sold to a local pulp mill, why not? Fast Growth = Fast $ Cash $
Is the Paulownia a great tree or a weed? Since we seem to sell out of these by early spring each year, our
opinion is that they are a Princess of a tree. What do you think?

We typically sell out of our limited crop very quickly, so you might consider placing or Booking your order now. A Booked order will sit until we can get closer to the scheduled ship date, which works out well for those in the northern states
where planting can't happen until mid-late spring.

The root-crowns are held in cold-storage until shipped, and we inspect each one to make sure it has sprouting
buds.
Paulownia ships best when dormant or just starting to sprout. Once they arrive, plant them in the ground or containers with a well-drained soil mix. They like moisture, but not being wet.
