Gardenia Flowering Plants and Nursery Tree Seedlings
Aside from the sterotype, Gardenias are popularly planted throughout the southern half of the country. Native to eastern Asia, there are many varieties that are now used in bonsai, containers, and hedge-rows from Zones 7 to 10. They will handle
temperatures into the 20's (but not below that), and they need the summer heat to thrive and bloom well.
Gardenias like regular ample watering, but need fairly well-drained soils with plenty of organic materials. Like the Rhododendrons and Azaleas, the Gardenia does best in an acidic soil. The root system is shallow and sensitive, so a thick mulch layer to
control weeds is better than cultivating.
There are new varieties being produced every year, but in general, they seem to be a medium-size shrub about to four to six feet in height, and equally as wide. A dwarf type, the "Radicans", is only a foot in height, and two to three feet wide, making a
very interesting low walkway border or bonsai plant. We used to grow the Radicans, and we hope to do so again, but currently not available for this season. The Tahitian Gardenia is the other extreme, growing up to eighteen feet tall and wide.
We grow the variety "Miami Supreme", which grows to six feet tall and wide, with 4-inch double white blooms. This one primarily blooms in the spring, but will periodically blooms throughout the summer. In our area, our specimen plants seem to bloom
throughout the year.
Keep the Gardenia trim to thicken it up, and well-watered without being water-logged, and they should grow very well with plenty of fragrant blooms.
Gardenias - Not Just for Corsages
The classic corsage is the white or yellowish double Gardenia bloom. The fragrant flowers are contrasted by the thick shiny dark green leaves, on tall pruned shrubs.
In the landscape design, Gardenias are easily trimmed into shapes, or used as hedges. Plant them singly where the flowers
can be seen, and where the breeze can carry the fragrant scent. As bonsai is popular, these can also be used, and growing the Gardenia in half barrels or containers is very attractive.
